Stump Grinding – Sydney Tree Removers

Every tree removal leaves a stump on the ground. A stump is the bottom part of the tree trunk attached to the roots underground. It is vital to remove a tree stump because of the following reasons:

  • Stumps can be a breeding ground for insects and pests. As the wood on the stump rots, they emit moisture that helps ants, moulds, cockroaches, rodents, and termites to multiply. As they proliferate, they can invade nearby structures and destroy them.

  • Stumps can be dangerous to children playing or people passing by. They can fall or trip on the hole, causing damage or injury.

  • Stumps can be unsightly to the ground as they form ugly holes in the soil. It can defeat the aesthetic purpose of a landscape.

There are several ways to remove a stump. These include burning the stump, digging the stump, rotting the stump, or using a stump grinder.

  • To burn a stump, dig holes about eight inches deep around it. Fill these holes with dry mulch or wood or petrol to keep the flames burning. It may take 12 to 24 hours to burn a stump completely.

  • To remove a stump via digging, dig around the soil in the stump to expose the roots. When the roots get exposed, chop or cut them to detach them from the ground. It will be easier to take out the stump from the soil.

  • Rotting a stump can be done chemically or naturally. Both processes start with digging holes that are eight inches deep around the stump. Within these holes, you can pour a chemical stump remover or nitrogen-rich substances like blood meal or compost inside the holes. A chemical stump remover accelerates the rotting of the stump within two to three weeks. While nitrogen-rich substances accelerate the rotting of a stump within three to six weeks.

Stump Grinding

Stump grinding is the fastest and most earth-friendly way to remove a stump. Using a stump grinder, such a piece of equipment turns the stump into mulch, which can be used as compost or soil cover to prevent moisture from escaping.

The stump grinder has a circular saw powered by electricity, hydraulic, or petrol that can crush the stump within 6 to 8 inches below ground level within 15 minutes to 2 hours. It can be the size of a mower or a truck. Stump grinding usually involves less mess and leaves a much smaller hole on the ground. Some roots from the stump may remain. But they may not grow because most of the major roots are removed. The wood chips can also be used to cover the ground.
